Qualifications for Deputy Sheriffs  21 Years of Age

Possess a Valid Alabama Driver’s License                                                                                                                        

High School Diploma or GED

Good Health and Physically Fit

Pass a Criminal Background Check 


Application Procedures   

Applications must be filed with the Montgomery City-County Personnel Department at 27 Madison Ave., Montgomery, AL. 36104. Applications may be delivered in person,  by U.S. Mail, or facsimile (334) 241-2219 

Requirements   

All Applicants must take a written test, which consists of multiple choice questions. Applicants will receive notification regarding  the date, time & location of the examination.  

Physical Fitness Requirements  

Applicants must pass a physical agility / ability test which is required by the Sheriff’s Office and the Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. This test consists of pushing a car 15 ft.; short run and climb a wood or chain link fence; short run and crawl through a frame (similar to a window); short run and cross a balance beam (4 inches off ground); short run and pull a 165 lb dummy 15 ft. Applicants will also be required to run 1.5 miles in less than 15 minutes & 28 seconds. Complete 22 push ups in 1 minute and 25 sit ups in 1 minute.

Salary Range    1. Deputy Sheriff Trainee: $35,066                                                                                                                       

2. Deputy Sheriff: $36,186 - $45,139

3. Corporal: $32,354 - $46,057

4. Sergeant: $39,386 - $56,067

5. Lieutenant: $43,408 - $61,793

6. Captain: $50,430- $71,789

Applicants must be willing to perform shift work and be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays. There may also be requirements to work overtime. Applicants will be required to complete the Peace Officers Standards and Training Commissions Minimum Standards Academy. After successful completion of the Minimum Standards Academy you will be required to complete a 6 month probationary period. If employed, you must reside in Montgomery County prior to the end of your probationary period.
